EVENT : 27th JUNE 7pm – Place Bristol Library ( Post by Bristol Library )

“Turning ‘ages” – an exciting new artwork at Bristol Central Library
The Central Library’s beautiful entrance hall is currently home to an inspiring new artwork by Bristol artist Elaine Robinson. “Turning ‘ages” is an installation piece which highlights the intimate and complex connections between people, books and the ephemera that is picked and left behind in their pages. “Turning ‘ages” brings to life the voices of people who have owned or borrowed the encased books, and demonstrates that books can be so much more than just a collection of printed words.
The installation is in the early stages of a nationwide tour which started with Bristol’s Clifton College and Junction 3 libraries. It will stay at the Central Library until the end of June before continuing on to Sheffield, Liverpool and Birmingham Libraries later in the year, with further venues still to be confirmed.
To further celebrate and explore the piece, on Friday 27 June from 7pm the library will host a collaborative event featuring the artist introducing her work alongside written works by Bristol’s Southwest Scriptwriters. These works were inspired by the themes of “Turning ‘ages” and will be brought to life by local actors. The event is free and places can be booked in advance at any Bristol library or by ringing the Central Library on 0117 9037250.

An absolutely amazing, creative, inspiring piece of work. The piece takes me back to many times in my life, and memories that are yet to come. It also highlights the presence of books in other peoples lives in times gone by, and encapsulates a myriad of worlds that we can enter if we so choose. Thank-you for sharing your beautiful art, and making my trips to the central library a richer experience. I will miss the piece when it leaves, and will look forward to your future creations.

It was such a pleasure to attend your turning ‘ages event in collaboration with southwest scriptwriters. The vignettes worked to enrich and enliven the experience of the artwork. The piece itself is a sensory delight – you feel drawn in and surrounded by it, and the stories held within. It leaves a poignant message with you as a viewer – it tells a story of change, continuation and connection. A wonderful evening and a truly gorgeous and powerful sculptural piece.
